What is the best shampoo brand to use?
Are you always asking which brand is better than this and that brand? The marketers are clever in the way they “sell” their products with so many celeb endorsements and avenues to get their media seen.
Want to know a little secret? It isn’t so much about the BRAND of shampoo as it is about WHAT is IN it!!!
For anyone with color-treated hair, the must have is this : A SULFATE-FREE SHAMPOO!! What are those sulfates, you ask? Well, they are ingredients that help the shampoo to lather. Many high-end shampoo brands will have amazing scents or pretty packaging. What you don’t know is that the first two or three ingredients matter the most. If you read “Sodium Lauryl Sulfate” or “ Sodium Laureth Sulfate” you do not want that touching your hair! These two are most commonly used together and sometimes you will see just one. Either way, do not use on your hair if you want to keep those color molecules inside your hair. The sulfates will also speed up the damage done to your hair by drying it out and not allowing the moisturizers to actually do their job.
For fine haired clients, the same rule applies. Read again the above paragraph. Only thing to add is that the harsh sulfates gradually eat away at the hair strand, causing it to become even more fragile. Simply switching out your shampoo can make a big difference to your hair over time!!!
For curly haired clients, read and follow the above information as well. For your hair, you need to cleanse your scalp more so than your hair. Those sulfates will start to wear down the curl pattern of your hair structure and cause it to be extremely dry, no matter what oils you use or leave in sprays you put in.
Lesson to learn is avoid at all costs ANY brand that has the harsh sulfates in it. This includes Biolage and Redken especially. One brand that does not have these exact sulfates but says it is sulfate free, Pureology, is equally harsh in it’s cleansing action. That brands’ sulfate replacements do the same level of damage to the hair over time.
I guarantee that if you change just your shampoo to a “sulfate free” one, you WILL notice more shine, less breakage, more color retention, and easier to comb hair over time. Davines and Malibu C are my top favorites that I recommend.
