How to care for your hair in the summer (yes, it changes per season)
We are slowly approaching Summer… whenever these cool temps and rainy days start to fade away that is. Did you know that your hair care needs shift during the warmer months compared to winter? That’s right, the need for more spf is indeed a necessity for your hair just as much as it is for your skin in the summer months. Most of us do not think about sun protection for our hair, regardless if you have chemically treated or colored hair, it definitely needs the protection. But how do you protect your hair from the harmful UVA and UVB rays of the sun you ask…. there are a few things you can do!
First, you want to make sure you are wearing a hat more often than not during the summer. This goes for EVERYONE! Not only are you protecting your hair, but you are protecting the large surface area of skin (your scalp) too. Secondly, there are brands like Sun Bum like sell a product with spf 30 as a scalp protectant hair mist. There is also a leave in mist sold by Davines called SU Hair Milk that protects your hair color with UV filtering ingredients. This is especially key for those of you that have darker hair colors! The majority of people know that their hair color lightens in the sun, but it is truly doing more than just adding some few highlights. As we all know, the risk of skin cancer increases every single time that we are exposed to the sun, which is every single day.
Lastly, lets talk about the importance of getting in and out of the pool or sea/ocean/lake waters all summer long. These waters will have so many additives that your hair is not exposed to all year round and they will continue to accumulate within the inside structure (cortex) of your hair. Causing brittle ends, dry hair, tangles, and even discoloration. Your hair is essentially similar to that of a sponge. It can absorb a lot of liquids and after a certain point, it can no longer hold onto any more. Therefore, I suggest that BEFORE you enter a pool or body of water, get your hair “full” of indoor water from a spray bottle or just using the sink or shower head to soak your hair, put it in a braid or ponytail and enjoy your activity. Also, be sure to rinse or wash your hair out immediately after your activity as well to ensure the miscellaneous chemicals or particles do not start to rest and sit within your hair. Keep a leave-in conditioner spray near your bottle of skin and hair sun protection to establish a new routine for your haircare needs during this beautiful time of year. Once your summer routine is established and the season comes to an end, make your appointment with me for a Malibu C Hard Water or Swimmers hair care treatment to keep your hair happy and healthy from within!
A hard water or swimmer’s hair care treatment takes only 20 minutes as an addon to any haircut or color service. It is vital to the internal health of your hair and it removes all of the impurities that do not allow any room for your daily conditioner or leave in sprays to do their job by depositing the necessary proteins and lipids that your hair needs to stay healthy, moisturized, and strong.
As always, a trim throughout the year will help to keep your hair in the best shape that it can be !
